RAKI

―Please tell us about yourself.

I’m a Barcelona born designer living in Berlin. I’m addicted to travel and curious for discovering new cultures, so hopefully soon will be Japan!

―You are always welcome! Your next bording pass will be written from Tegel to Narita haha. And please tell us your brand concept.

Most of my income comes from costume and styling, so I call my brand my “small egotrips”,
like any creative I like to have a project where i can do my own thing with no one having a say on it
and with no economic pressure, so my clothes are an explosion of how i feel when i’m in my studio by my own. I do unique pieces, for women or men, combining recycled vintage fabrics and trimmings and new materials… inspired by everything i see and discover, my style is quite contradictive and chamaleonic, i’m quite open to try new things, so is difficult to define by a concept, but i guess there’s always some common points: colourful, playful, folklore.

―Yes I think it’s to the point. And to see your creation,we can see gorgeous decoration and sometime a kind of Japanese twist(for ex, sleeve of a cardigan)
Which designer do you think you are influenced?

When i started studying fashion, someone gave me a book on japanese street style, and immediately i was captivated…that was my ideal world of colour contradictions!
I’m mostly influenced by people i meet or i simply cross in the streets, and from all the travels i do and their folkloric wear, then i love mixing them into a new combination.
When I started in fashion I was most influenced by Vivianne Westwood in her punk and new romantic years, and by the Antwerp 6, and their transgressive vision on making clothes, but I don’t follow fashion much, although i always have a look at the collections of Olivier Rousteing for Balmain :-)

―See.and you are based in Berlin.Do you think your creation is influenced by the life in Berlin?

life in Berlin is playful and full of freedom and wild costume parties, in that sense, i’m inspired by the Berlin lifestyle… but, on the other hand, here the style is to a great extent influenced by the weather: grey, cold, minimal…. I prefer to bring a sunny and colourful spanish flavour to it.

―Gray, Black, white…my image of the Berliner is same. Btw, all of your clothes are handmade??Do you want to continue the handmade style?

I do every piece by myself or in my studio with occasional collaborations with Berlin based handworkers. That makes the ammount of items i can produce pretty small, but it makes each of them unique and special…for me is about having fun and improvising, using unique materials and special trimmings i find along the way, and thats something you can only achieve through hand-made clothes, and not through a production line…so, while there’s independent shops that support this concept, i’d love to continue this way…its much more creative!

―Do you know some Japanese designers?

I’ve always admired the works of Yunya Watanabe and Rei Kawakubo, they’re some of my biggest influences too.

―From what kind of art do you think you are inspired?

I find inspiration in the mix of many styles, from the elegance of the “Art Deco”, to the spontaneity of the “Punk”, from the collages of Rauschenberg to the psycoledia of Hieronymus Bosch, and i could carry on like this forever…

―To create the clothes, what is the most important thing for you?

I guess chaos… I’m an impulsive collector of textiles, every flea market I go, every country I visit, I bring fabrics, carpets, buttons, laces, etc… so my studio is a mess of patterns and textures that inspire me to create and improvise.

―at last, please give the message for Japanese fashion fans!

Please, keep on having fun dressing up and filling the streets of colour, u are a real inspiration!

Thank you very much!
