Power & Style meets David Bowie

For centuries, man has used clothes and other adornments to indicate status, wealth and position. These are the first lines of the back description of the new book Power & Style, a world history of politics and dress by Dominique and François Gaulme. This book is now available at the MoMu Library and explores fashion’s role in distinguishing those with authority and influence in societies throughout the ages – from the naked societies to Beau Brummel, Napoleon as well Mao and ending at the day of tomorrow.

At the other spectrum there’s the book David Bowie Is from the eponymous V&A exposition. Like the people with status in Power & Style, David Bowie’s style left an indelible stamp on the look, the style, the sound and the attitudes of his time. This book gives access to the David Bowie archive of performance costume, ephemera and original artwork by the artist, including costumes of Kensai Yamamoto and Alexander McQueen.

1930s Fashion The Definitive Sourcebook

1930s:
The book on the 1930s sheds light on the more mature femininity of the decade as translated by new silhouettes. The glamour of the Technicolor cinema and Hollywood starlets is translated in a figure-hugging silhouette that shows no signs of the upcoming austerity around the world. Until the late 1930s, European couture houses sold luxurious evening gowns to their American customer base, whereas in Europe the design became more focused on practicality and comfort. The beautiful glamour shots and fashion plates show that the 1930s are so much more than just the decade between the Jazz Age of the 1920s and WW2.

Mom, why are you wearing my dress?

Do you know the phenomenon of your mother liking to wear your clothes?

Throughout history certain forms and styles of dresses have been deemed appropriate – or more significantly, inappropriate – for people as they age. Recently this trending-topic has been subject of many programs and opinions on television and internet.
In her new, smart and entertaining book, Julia Twigg explains how it is that many more women of a certain age are finally dressing without pain and gives the reader a fresh view on this topic of Fashion and Age based on cross-cultural studies and investigations. Focusing her research on feminism, this ground-braking study is the first to systematically explore the links between clothing and age on a balance of empirical, historical and theoretical perspectives in the form of an absorbing and Imaginative book.

Another cross-cultural study that stand-alone in it’s field and now is available in the library, is the new book and investigation ‘Fashion and Art’, edited by Adam Geczy and Vicki Karaminas.

SCIENCE DAY/Sunday November 24th 2013

The Science Day is a chance for Flemish Universities, Institutes of Science or Companies to discuss and reflect current developments in Science by hosting various workshops and exhibitions.

MoMu takes part in the Science Day 2013 by presenting the wondrous technique of 3D printing in fashion.
This up coming theme seems to become more and more present in our daily lives. Not only modern technique or medicine will profit from the recent invention of 3D printing.
Different web sides, e.g. i.materialise.com, offer people to print out their own designs and to help realising them their visions and ideas to become real.
As well in fashion, 3D printing is counted as an exciting method for designers to print out visions, they before could only dream of.
Fashion designers, like Iris van Herpen and Pierre Renaoux are counted as fashion pioneers including 3D printing within their collections.
Experience more about the technique of 3D printing and get in touch with magical high fashion designs-
